Project Description:

As part of a collaboration between EarthCheck and the Griffith Business School/GIFT, a PhD scholarship is being offered across one of the following key three research areas –

1. Risk, resilience, and disaster management across the visitor economy

Research in risk, resilience, and disaster management in the visitor economy is critical for ensuring the safety and sustainability of the industry, as well as for informing policymaking and regulatory frameworks. Applicants applying under the risk, resilience and disaster management stream could focus on:

System-based, and context-specific risk assessment tools which capture the unique characteristics of the visitor economy;
Enhancing the resilience of local communities through community-based disaster management approaches – engaging the visitor economy as the epicentre;
Incorporating technology, such as artificial intelligence, remote sensing, and big data analytics in disaster management and resilience.

2. Carbon reduction and net zero in the visitor economy

The visitor economy needs to transform for climate action. Achieving net zero is critical to the sustainability of the global visitor economy. Applicants applying under the, carbon emissions and net zero stream could focus on:

Communicating climate action with impact internally (across industry) and externally (with visitors)
Strategies to assist with decarbonisation of tourism, hospitality and events
Regenerative tourism activities and experiences with the potential to reduce carbon

3. Overtourism and carrying capacity in vulnerable destinations

Carrying capacity and overtourism have the potential to cause negative impacts on the environment, local communities, and the visitor experience. Applicants applying under the overtourism and carrying capacity in vulnerable destinations stream could focus on:

Innovative methods to determine and monitor carrying capacity.
Responsible and regenerative tourism behaviour in destinations affected by issues in carrying capacity and overtourism;
Advancing policies and regulatory frameworks in carrying capacity and overtourism in iconic tourism destinations.

As part of a collaboration between Pitch Camp and the Griffith Business School, a PhD scholarship is being offered in the following broad research area –

The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly changed the way we work and communicate. Online pitching and presentations have become more prevalent in business-to-business and internal communication, replacing the tradition of in-person meetings, pitches, and presentations.

This research project aims to measure the impact, success, threats, weaknesses, and other pros and cons of online pitching and presenting versus in-person pitching and presentations and meetings. It will also identify the best practices for effective communication in the post-pandemic era. The following research objectives have been identified as being most likely to be pursued within this PhD research –

Differentiate between pitching and presenting - which is advantaged in an online environment?
Determine the effectiveness of online pitching/presentations compared to in-person pitches/presentations in B2B and internal communication.
Identify the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of online presenting and in-person pitches/ presentations.
Investigate the impact of COVID-19 on B2B and internal communication.
Explore the potential outcomes of online learning and its implications for B2B and internal communication.
Establish the best practices for effective communication in an era of artificial intelligence and how they can be achieved?
Other research objectives will likely emerge as the PhD project develops.

Funding Information:

The PhD scholarship will be jointly funded by Pitch Camp and the Griffith Business School. The scholarship has a total value of AUD$42,192 per annum (indexed) for three years. An internship with Pitch Camp is also a possibility for the successful candidate.

In addition to the PhD scholarship, Pitch Camp is open to the possibility of the successful applicant undertaking a paid internship in its Brisbane office. This unique opportunity would allow the candidate to undertake research relevant to their project and gain practical experience by completing tasks relevant to the day-to-day operations of Pitch Camp.

Project Description:Consumer financial decision-making is an area of growing academic and policy relevance, given the increasing self-responsibility for making consequential financial decisions affecting consumers’ immediate and future financial well-being. Unfortunately, many consumers seem either ill-prepared or unable to take on increased financial responsibility. Consumers’ financial decisions can be better understood by examining their psychological characteristics, such as susceptibility to interpersonal influence, risk aversion, consideration of future consequences, or money attitudes. Accordingly, there is an increasing research tradition in marketing and consumer behaviour looking at how to reduce consumers’ financial vulnerability and improve their financial outcomes, taking into account their psychological characteristics.
