Supervisor Name: | Professor Kristina Murphy, [email protected] |
Location (City/Campus): | Brisbane/Mt Gravatt Campus |
Project Description: | Griffith University’s School of Criminology and Criminal Justice is the largest community of criminologists in Australia and is recognised as a leading criminology department globally. In 2022 it was ranked #1 for Criminology and Law in Australia and Kristina Murphy was ranked as the #1 Australian Criminologist. The School of Criminology and Criminal Justice at Griffith has 105 PhD students enrolled in its PhD program, making it a vibrant and engaging place to study. The successful applicant will be based in the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice on Griffith University’s Mt Gravatt campus. The successful applicant will work closely with Professor Murphy and Dr Hardy to investigate the drivers of conspiracy-fuelled extremist beliefs and behaviours. Centrally, we seek to understand conspiracy-fuelled extremism through a theoretical framework that considers “injustice grievances” brought on by the COVID pandemic, alongside the “de-legitimisation” of governments, authorities and policies that occurred during the pandemic. This framework allows us to investigate how individuals responded to perceived injustices, and why this resulted in the de-legitimisation of authorities and policies, to produce extremist attitudes and behaviours. Importantly, our project also seeks to explore the social harms this form of extremism creates for both families and society. The PhD student will lead a unique piece of research related to the project. The student will be involved in collecting and analysing survey and interview data collected from conspiracy extremists, as well as from family members of conspiracy extremists. The project will comprise a team of researchers: Chief Investigators Kristina Murphy, Dr Keiran Hardy and Professor Adrian Cherney (University of Queensland), the successful PhD candidate, a number of Honours students, research assistants and a postdoctoral research fellow. |
