Supervisor Name:Professor Kristina Murphy, [email protected]
Location (City/Campus):Brisbane/Mt Gravatt Campus
Project Description:

Griffith University’s School of Criminology and Criminal Justice is the largest community of criminologists in Australia and is recognised as a leading criminology department globally. In 2022 it was ranked #1 for Criminology and Law in Australia and Kristina Murphy was ranked as the #1 Australian Criminologist. The School of Criminology and Criminal Justice at Griffith has 105 PhD students enrolled in its PhD program, making it a vibrant and engaging place to study.

The successful applicant will be based in the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice on Griffith University’s Mt Gravatt campus.
We are currently looking for a PhD candidate to join a team of scholars working on an Australian Research Council funded project awarded to Professor Kristina Murphy and Dr Keiran Hardy at Griffith University. The project aims to ‘Understand the emerging threat of conspiracy-fuelled extremism in Australia’.

The successful applicant will work closely with Professor Murphy and Dr Hardy to investigate the drivers of conspiracy-fuelled extremist beliefs and behaviours. Centrally, we seek to understand conspiracy-fuelled extremism through a theoretical framework that considers “injustice grievances” brought on by the COVID pandemic, alongside the “de-legitimisation” of governments, authorities and policies that occurred during the pandemic. This framework allows us to investigate how individuals responded to perceived injustices, and why this resulted in the de-legitimisation of authorities and policies, to produce extremist attitudes and behaviours. Importantly, our project also seeks to explore the social harms this form of extremism creates for both families and society. The PhD student will lead a unique piece of research related to the project. The student will be involved in collecting and analysing survey and interview data collected from conspiracy extremists, as well as from family members of conspiracy extremists.

The project will comprise a team of researchers: Chief Investigators Kristina Murphy, Dr Keiran Hardy and Professor Adrian Cherney (University of Queensland), the successful PhD candidate, a number of Honours students, research assistants and a postdoctoral research fellow.

Funding Information

The award has an annual stipend of $32,192 (indexed) for a period of up to three years of full-time study.

A successful International applicant will also be awarded a Griffith University International Postgraduate Research Scholarship to cover tuition fees for up to three years. Please see the GUIPRS Conditions of Award for more information.

Special Requirements

The selection of applicants for the award of higher degree research scholarships at Griffith University involves consideration of your academic merit and research background. To be successful within this role, you will have well-developed organisation, interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills, be able to work both independently and collaboratively as a member of a team, be able to work under pressure and be able to prioritise tasks to meet project deadlines, show high levels of initiative and flexibility, be self-motivated, and be comfortable working with quantitative (i.e., survey) and qualitative (i.e., interview) data. You will have evidence of a passion for research in the social sciences, with a strong desire to undertake research on conspiracy-related extremism or its impacts.

Expressions of interest are welcome from domestic and international applicants

Applicants must have completed, or expect to complete, a bachelors degree with honours equivalent to first class honours or a Masters degree (AQF Level 9) incorporating a significant research component of a standard comparable to a bachelor honours degree or be regarded by Griffith University as having an equivalent level of attainment in accordance with Schedule One of the HDR Scholarship Policy. For further information on the eligibility requirements for the program refer here.

We specifically seek applicants who have a background in criminology, social psychology, or terrorism studies (or cognate area). International applicants should ensure that English Language Proficiency requirements for the program are met before formally applying. Applicants to research programs will need to show they meet:
